reflective nature

'ASUKA' wallpaper by Osborne & Little

I've been wanting to use the colour yellow for years, but I have yet to meet the client who loves yellow quite as much as I do - it's not like I haven't tried selling the concept...

In the meantime, I've been exploring this glorious colour on my own turf and I am delighted with the results. Rooms that are naturally well lit can take almost any colour and if used in moderation, there is a shade of yellow to suit every home.

The key is to avoid using solid blocks of strong yellow that can make a room feel a little oppressive. Choosing instead to layer colours that support, much like the warm golden tones in the patterned leaves which incidentally, glow throughout the day. Bliss.

The wallpaper, illustrated above is currently up in my apartment.

The two photographs above, are quick shots taken from projects that I'm currently working on. London homes can be quite tall and lanky, with relatively small windows, so it's not unusual to have to contort your body around furniture, to 'find the day'...

If you have a small, dark room and/or a particular wall that receives a decent amount of light (from either natural or artificial light sources) do consider using metallic surfaces on wall tiles, wallpapers, mirrors etc. This can be a very effective method of 'bouncing' the light into and around the room.

  1. Heather, I am so happy you've started a blog! I go to your website a lot for insiration! I even redesigned my sons studio using your work as insiration!(Hope you don't mind?) It's been 5 months of grueling management but he is finally moving back in. He now has new bathroom, kitchen plumbing, electricity. He better stay a while, is all I have to say:-) The only thing left is the backsplash. Yikes..that is really taking lots of energy. The kitchen is white with gray counter-tops and he is insisting on a black (glass) backsplash. Although it's a great look it would be too much in such a tiny space. Anyway I will send you pix after its done, since you've been the inspiration. I am so happy you are blogging! I already love everything you've posted!

  2. I love your writing. I really covet that wallpaper - just gorgeous. There was an explosion in Sydney (perhaps worldwide?) of the the Florence Broadhurst wallpaper look, which resulted in every club and restaurant in Sydney suddenly becoming gaudy and florid, huge patterns and chandeliers, like the inside of a 1970's brothel. I think the negative space created by the quite grey wall you have pictured is the way of the future, you know? Just tranquil, like looking up through branches while lying in a wood.

  3. I sort of broke the rules with Henry's yellow bedroom which is a serious, unbroken block of custard yellow. It's a space that he only spends evenings and nights in, and I wanted to create a warm, cuddly space when lit with lamps, and it works on that level. Actually, I sort of had a 1950's boy's coyboy themed bedroom in mind, with highlights of primaries, cheesy as that sounds. I'm really not a fan of the ubiquitous pastel baby textiles. I'm going to learn so much on your blog. Love it.

  4. Kell, Henry's room is beautiful. You've succeeded in creating a space that is both cosy and stimulating, which is no feat! I like the colour (it's a gentle yellow which according to my research, has a completely different set of rules - as if I was ever to follow rules?! No no, I just like to make them!) I particularly like the rug you've chosen and the mobile. Australians have a confident eye for colour, it must be the light.

FB wallpaper? Yes,London was somewhat saturated with it a couple years back. Although, I'd like to see the 'horses' as a wallpaper in child's room. This w/p you're referring to is by Jocelyn Warner and it's all hand screened and at £100 per roll, quite a purchase, but oh, so very beautiful.

By the way, I love the 50's 'cowboys' theme!

Thank you for your lovely words, they are such an encouragement.

  8. Greetings. I just visited your website and I love your work. In your residential projects especially, the combination of luxe vintage elements with clean modern is just stunning. I am so glad I visited.
